Yarn-World
March 30th, 2007
Through the ages, men have envisioned many different worlds. Though science tells us it’s round, in medieval times most Europeans believed it to be flat (or else). The ancient Greeks believed it to be suspended above Hades, and if you like God of War 2 you’re probably fond of the idea that that all rests atop the shoulders of mighty Atlas…
Terry Pratchett’s novels place the Discworld atop four giant elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant space turtle (and if you didn’t already know that you’re missing out on some seriously good books). And science fiction has brought us the Niven Ring, the Dyson Sphere, and (of course) the land of ”Long long ago in a galaxy far far away”.
We at Hermitworks propose another model. This came up after an artist (who hopefully doesn’t read this entry any time soon) drew some stringy looking smoke coming out of a crater (to the artist’s credit, I understand it was meant to be more of a sketch, but this is what happens when you let a bunch of programmers see a work in progress). This got us thinking: why would string be coming up out of a crater? We had always thought of this as an impact crater but if it was indeed volcanic then what could the meaning of the strange string-like smoke be?
We propose to you the tale of Yarn-World, which rests atop a giant ball of yarn which rests in the paws of a giant Space Kitten. Occasionally, the kitten gets a little rough (which leads to earth quakes), or blows a bit too hard on the yarn, pushing a small bit if it through the crust in an eruption of deadly tangles. Lightning (and thunder storms in general) is, of course, simply a result of having a cosmic amount of fur and sweater-material nearby.
The Yarnians, who inhabit this strange world, fear the coming of the Great Stilling: that apocalyptic day when the Space Kitten will get bored of the yarn and wander away, seeking out other sources of amusement. It is said that a Yarnian who lives a good life may be taken to live forever on the Great Collar, in the shadow of the Great Jingly Bell, nevermore to fear the universe’s fickle whims.
Of course, this really doesn’t have anything to do with programming or game development or even work in general - but I thought some humor would be a nice break from my usual ranting.
Anyway, back to work now…

You forgot the catnip. The day of catnip will signal a gradual slowing of the rotation of the Earth, along with a great massacre of Yarnians when the Space Kitten gets the munchies
